Board Mission
The Research Ethics on Humans Board (IRB) is concerned with conducting scientific and humanitarian research that requires the involvement of the human element in the study according to national and international standards for the ethics of scientific research and scientific merits by facilitating the tasks of researchers and reducing time and effort instead of sending it to councils outside the university and thus accelerating and revitalizing scientific research in Yarmouk University. This is done by reviewing the methods and methods used in a given research, to ensure that this research is ethical in accordance with agreed upon international standards for the ethics of scientific research.
Board Vision
Our future vision lies in expanding the scope of receiving and evaluating research, not only at the level of faculty members at Yarmouk University, but to become a nucleus for serving the Jordanian research community and a reference for much research and studies in various scientific, medical, social, humanitarian, and educational specializations.
Objectives and Tasks of the Board
The board aims to protect and care for the rights of people participating in research by reviewing and approving research proposals. It assumes the following tasks and powers:
- Ensuring the validity of the scientific justifications for conducting research and studies by reviewing, controlling, coordinating and following up on all proposals for scientific research projects and research tasks that are conducted within the university and its affiliated facilities or in its name and related to the use of human beings to ensure that they take into account research ethics.
- Ensuring the adequacy of the research team, its ability to conduct the study, and its commitment to the principles of good practice for conducting the study.
- Approving the study plan, approving the start of its conduct and follow-up, and ensuring that the research procedures contain a clear implementation plan with protection of information and results.
- Ensure that the participant’s acceptance to have the study conducted on him has been done voluntarily according to the consent form that is signed by him.
- Reviewing the scientific content of research project proposals and research tasks, whether funded through the university or elsewhere.
- Reviewing research proposals to ensure that the risks that may affect individuals participating in the research are minimized, or - at least - that those risks are limited in relation to the desired benefits.
- Ensure that the selection of research participants is scientifically appropriate in terms of type and number, and ensure that the privacy of the participants is protected, in addition to treating information and data with complete confidentiality.
- Documenting the results, taking into account international standards for scientific research ethics and scientific merits, determining the suitability of scientific research for the local community, and determining the funding or supporting body.
- Conducting continuous reviews of research and coordinating with the Deanship of Scientific Research regarding following up on the issue of commitment to scientific research ethics in research supported by the Deanship.
- Spreading awareness of biomedical and medical research ethics for those working in the research field and encouraging related activities, including seminars, panel discussions, and lectures.
Research Activities
Clinical and basic scientific and medical research:
Basic research deals with various topics that require the involvement of the human element in the study, such as chemical and molecular biomarkers such as genes.
As for clinical research, it includes interventional clinical research (experimental), non-interventional clinical research (observational/follow-up), and epidemiological research.
Interventional (experimental) clinical research, such as pharmacological clinical studies, deals with research and studies that include medical devices, surgical, clinical and psychological procedures. As for non-interventional clinical research (observational/follow-up), it concerns patients and a specific drug is given to each patient in particular. It is also concerned with analyzing the information obtained through diagnosis, treatment and supervision using epidemiological study methods.
Epidemiological research aims to study the frequency of occurrence of diseases and their causes over a period of time. All of this research is conducted by specialized researchers and students after obtaining approval from the Institutional Committee for Pharmaceutical Studies.
Social, humanitarian and educational research:
Social, humanitarian, and educational research deals with various topics that require the involvement of the human element in the study, such as research related to societal issues to study the extent of awareness and evaluation of community members from various groups, such as school students, women, children, people with special needs, and refugees, regarding specific issues that are within the jurisdiction of educational, social, and humanitarian colleges.
The institutional committee meets at the invitation of its chairman or his deputy every month or whenever necessary. The meeting is legal in the presence of at least two-thirds of the members.
Approval granted to researchers by the institutional committee to conduct research is valid for only one year from the date of issuance of approval. Researchers must submit a request to renew and extend approval to continue the research for an additional period, along with submitting a brief report on the progress of the study if the study continues. Or close the study and provide the office with the final results upon completion of the study
